What is the difference between a "classic" cookie banner and a CMP?

A "classic" cookie banner is typically a static, informational tool designed only to notify users that cookies are in use on the site.

A Consent Management Platform (CMP), by contrast, is a more comprehensive and dynamic system.
It is a mandatory tool for ad monetization, as it is engineered to not only collect user consent but also to manage and transmit that consent in compliance with complex legal standards (like the GDPR).

Key Functional Differences of a CMP

For a website to be monetized with programmatic advertising, a simple cookie notice is insufficient. A compliant CMP is required for the following reasons:

  • Granular Consent:
A CMP (unlike a classic banner) allows visitors to set specific parameters for the data they agree to share and for what purposes.

  • Vendor-Level Choice: It enables users to grant or deny consent to specific advertising partners ("vendors") who may buy ad space on the site.

  • User Control:
A CMP must provide a mechanism for users to easily modify or withdraw their consent choices at any time.

The IAB Requirement for Monetization

For monetization purposes, it is a technical prerequisite to use a CMP that is verified and certified by the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau).
Only IAB-certified solutions can correctly store and signal consent to the advertising ecosystem.
